In a bid to achieve its energy efficiency target of 12% by 2015 and renewable energy target of 10 000 GWh by 2013, the Department of Minerals and Energy (DME) was looking to the building sector, industry and large business to assist in increasing energy efficiency. Speaking on behalf of Minister of Minerals and Energy Buyelwa Sonjica DME’s Tony Surridge said that although the building sector contributed a relatively minor percentage to national energy use, savings through low-cost and medium-cost technical interventions could well exceed 25%. “In order to allow for partial sectoral penetration of technical measures, however, a figure of 11 % had been calculated. A further 4% was thought to be realistically achievable through managerial intervention and behavioural changes,” he said, adding that a targeted final energy demand reduction of 12% by 2015 had, therefore, been set. “Government is leading by example and has instituted a programme where government buildings are retrofitted to become more energy-efficient,” he stated. The industrial and mining sectors combined were the largest users of energy in South Africa and were highly energy intensive.
