The construction of Eskom's first commercial renewable energy project, a R1.1 billion wind farm on the west coast, has kicked off with the power utility calling for expressions of interest from wind turbine makers.
The wind farm will have an initial capacity of 100 megawatts (MW) but capacity might be increased, depending on the quality of the bids. R1.1 billion is an indicative cost and would include land acquisition, civil works and the international cost of equipment, as this is a seller's market. Eskom has completed a pilot wind farm in Klipheuwel in the Western Cape to determine the technical and commercial viability of the technology. It has called for expressions of interests from wind turbine makers with experience in design, construction, commission and maintenance support. Those who qualify will proceed to the request for proposal stage, where bids will be assessed on their technical, financial and commercial compliance. Although Eskom has not yet finalised the time frame for the bid process, construction of the project would depend partly on the lead times for the delivery of equipment.
