Tongaat Hulett might build an ethanol plant in Mozambique within two to three years, the company said yesterday. The company is currently expanding sugar production in the country. The next phase of the expansion would be ethanol and it was likely to be in two or three years, said chief executive Peter Staude. Tongaat might benefit from plans by the Mozambican and South African governments to stimulate biofuel investment to mitigate record oil prices. The firm produces biofuels from sugar in Zimbabwe. "At the moment, with inflation and macroeconomics, it's quite difficult, but by the end of 2009 Zimbabwe will be in a different place than it is today," said Staude.
