The minerals and energy department is to move into a five-storey A-grade office building being built in the second phase of the R750 million Trevenna office campus in Sunnyside, Pretoria. The development is a joint venture between Atterbury Property, the privately owned property investment fund, and property development company Parkdev. Last month the Public Investment Corporation acquired a 51 percent shareholding in the project, which started in 2006. Coenie Bezuidenhout, a director of Atterbury Property Developments, said on Friday that work of the R300 million 22 000m² building was expected to end by late next year or early 2010. The department is due to occupy it from May 2010. The Trevenna office campus is being developed on a prime 3.86ha site east of the campus of the department of trade and industry in the Mandela Development Corridor. Bezuidenhout said the brief from the mineral and energy department, as the South African energy regulator, was that it wished to make a clear and responsible statement about energy-efficient buildings. He said the department wanted to illustrate to people the measures that could be adopted to reduce energy consumption. The new building will comply with the long-awaited and recently released SA National Standard (Sans) 204 for energy efficiency in buildings. Bezuidenhout said the building would be classified as "energy efficient" and comply with all the terms of Sans 204 regarding air conditioning, glazing and electricity consumption. The modern and stylish building would complement the chic designs and structures of neighbouring buildings, such as the 7 000m² building completed last month that was let to the newly formed Public Administration Leadership and Management Academy.
