Yingli Green Energy announced that it will provide its expertise in solar energy to power "20 Centers for 2010", the official campaign of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa. This campaign is part of the Football for Hope movement, which is using the power of the game for positive social change. Yingli Green Energy will actively support the campaign by providing solar power to training centers across Africa. Yingli Solar calls this "Football for Hope. Energy for Hope." The company will supply the centers with solar installations that will, for instance, power pitch lighting, computers or study rooms in those centers. Of the 20 centers, five are being built in South Africa and 15 in other African countries. The first six centers to be built are located in South Africa, Kenya, Rwanda, Mali, Namibia and Ghana. Construction has already started on some of the centers, five of which were in South Africa, with others located in Namibia, Mali, Rwanda, Ghana, Lesotho, and Kenya. The first center, which was opened in December 2009, and run in conjunction with local non-governmental organisation, Grassroots Soccer, was established in Khayelitsha, in the Western Cape. It activities had a strong focus on HIV/Aids education for youth, through football based programmes. The Yingli Solar off-grid solar installations would provide solar power for the training centers across Africa, which, in turn, would provide lighting for pitches, as well as electricity for computers or study rooms, or fridges to refrigerate vaccines and medicines, or even to pump water to storage tanks.
