Israeli firm SDE Energy says it has been given Kenyan government approval to build a 100MW power plant to tap waves on the East African country’s coastline. An SDE Energy statement here revealing this latest development on the renewable energy front, said the power plant would be installed at a production cost of $0.02 per kWh, and the energy produced would be bought by the local electric company. Kenya Power & Lighting, at a tariff of $0.08 per kWh. An official at Kenya's Ministry of Energy did point out, however, that the project was still at a very early stage. “They made enquiries and were to do certain things,” said the Ministry’s chief electrical engineer Richard Muiru. “We have told them to go ahead with feasibility studies, and if they are positive, then they can build.” Kenya is betting on renewable energy, such as geothermal and solar, to boost its electricity deficit. Geothermal producers have a feed-in tariff of $0.085 per kWh, in comparison with SDE Energy's $0.08 per kWh. Additional information: News date: 01/02/2011 |
