The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) saw its Tshopo hydropower plant rehabilitated after the local electric utility, SNEL, asked for help 13 years ago. In 2000, of the three turbines that had helped generate hydropower to the people in Kisangani, only one turbine remained in operation. SNEL enlisted the help of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and the organization helped provide spare parts hiring engineers from Alstom. The French company had originally supplied the turbines in the 1970s, but found that the system designed to adjust the water flow to the electricity demand was no longer working forcing SNEL employees to regulate the turbine gates manually. The rehabilitation of the 18 MW plant was jointly financed by Belgium and the DRC totaling $20 million and $2.5 million respectively. Additional information: News date: 02/09/2013 |
